A note from LoveLetterist:

For some time now, the muses have been hunting down our disagreeable habits... so that we can replace them with better ones.

We're aware that curling up like a roly-poly bug on our right side at night is delivering a sore shoulder and creased skin.

We saw an Instagram ad where a woman put a huge hair clip on each side of her head so that she wouldn't flip from her back to her side at night. 😂

For now... We're gonna stick with stretching the shoulder and massaging our face, even though an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Science, and medicine, and magic! Oh my!?! I’ve read recently articles that urge the reader to sleep on their left side. I’ve adopted that position due to my neuromuscular anomalies. For sleep science fans, Tempur Pedic makes a pillow suited for back and side sleepers. Mine is about ready for a replacement, so Black Friday deals here I come!

I often start on my left and almost always wake up on my right. 🤷‍♀️

Today’s letter and your comment just pulled a favorite movie from my depths!

Watching the trailer just now gave me godbumps. 😁

I see you are in possession of a “sentimental movie theater.” Far worse choices could be made. 😑 I like that the message from a 28 yo movie hasn’t been rendered a cliche. We both like Sandra Bullock. Now to round up a source. Thanks.

A “sentimental movie theater — indeed.

Did you notice the first comment with the trailer? “I miss movies like this… decent, sweet, our, elegant, family friendly…

That's interesting. I recall when I was pregnant I read to sleep on my left side...I laugh about this now. I was just happy to sleep period not worry about the position.

I've added more nerve glides over the last few years to help with my niggles. :) Get that nerve juice flowing...sounds like you're on the right track...keep building from there. (My Physical Therapist hat has come on.)

I will look up nerve glides… I’ve not heard of them. I’m not sure I knew about your PT hat. 🤔

My lumpectomy and radiation were on the right side. This resulted in some related tightness. If! When I build and maintain a daily strength and stretch habit I expect it will be quite good for me! 😁

Will do!

Thank you Julie!

And thanks for you generosity in connecting with Gary, too!

We’re gonna be a group of smooth and pain free movers!

These would be so good for you! Look up neurodynamics and I can be a resource if you would like. :)

Nothing short of a miracle, Julie. Until now I had never heard about nerve glides. It sounds like the multitude of niggles I’ve acquired are good candidates. Thanks so much for your comment.

When I was working with patients with persistent pain these were helpful movements to play around with...safe and most stay under the pain radar until they were ready to nudge a bit into it the discomfort. Neurodynamics is the "technical" term.

In high school a demonstration of “dynamic tension” was presented in the gym. A practitioner of same demonstrated what that consisted of and what he’d learned to do. “Super-human stuff” is the best I can bring into focus. Does that fall in a similar realm? I’m about to begin “pool PT” for overall leg muscle strengthening, and particularly for EMG documented neuromuscular atrophy above my left knee. I don’t see nerve regeneration being likely given long duration of this. So that’s what perked up my interest for nerve glides. Just thinking out loud. You seem pretty good at brain stimulation, too!

Hey Gary, I got all sorts of questions for you now! I'm curious but you don't need to answer or can email me if you would like to: hughesjulie413@gmail.com

How long have you had this atrophy? Is it changing? (worse, better, the same?) What if you did muscle strengthening outside of the pool? Are you also having low back discomfort? I love that you perked up to the idea of neurodynamics.

Email works for this. Coming up (not in expectation of an instant reply; mostly so some parts don’t drift off in the fog, of my noggin)

Tiger, Tiger, burning bright!

‘Neath the candles of the night...

Ben Rector’s “Ordinary Magic” struck just the right tone.

I have to ask if there was an overnight power outage? “It’s cold... it’s dark...” As your surroundings prepare to take on their coat of white, consequences for power loss become dire. Were that to happen during a “Polar Express” occurrence, advise the dear Muses to gather some thick blankets and, while lying on top of a soft floor covering, spoon each other and cover up with the blankets. Preferably on their left sides. 😊

While Jung was considered one of the greatest psychoanalysts of his time, he also delved into the darker realm. His focus on our “dark shadow” advised that to be “whole” the shadow must be accepted and integrated into our good parts. The quote you provided in today’s LoveLetter may or may not refer to our dark shadow. I wonder what he would think of meditation as a path to discover our unconscious characteristics?

Thanks LoveLetterist, as always, for nudging my neurons into a full waking state. 🪄🧑‍💼

I’ve been up quite early and find I absolutely love the habits I have been nurturing! It is my favorite part of the day.

What I have come to learn is that there is no “one size fits” all. Meditation wasn’t an ongoing “fit” for me — I was too antsy. Writing and yoga were my tickets to light.
