Thalia reads the morning mail. “Whaaaaaat? Our friend Laura at Beauty in Movement is hosting an online daaaaaa-nce party?”
“Role model.” Nia shudders at the thought of dancing online where others might see her. “Following her flow.”
“Just think… Laura used to cut Loveletterist’s hair in Delafield Wisconsin. She’s the one who introduced us to yoga!” Cal walks backward, then forward. “Recognizing she needed life change… she road-tripped the US… lived in Oregon for a while… then landed in Australia where she teaches people how to hula hoop.”
“Some might think it sounds craaaaa-zy —” Thalia twirls. “I think — she’s living her best life!”

I have a feeling Laura didn’t give a second thought to Zoom-Dancing or Hula-Hooping on camera. Nia’s shudder, as she thought about dancing online, reminded me of myself. “I’ll make a fool of myself! I’ll step on her feet! There’s no way I can dance fast! If I dance slow, our bodies might touch!”
Recalling those and many other inhibitions, I was struck by the difference between feeling like I was rehearsing for a show, and dancing? Yes, just dancing. Feeling the rhythms. Flowing with the music. Maybe even bodies touching?🤷🏽 Instead of try outs for “Strictly Ballroom!”
How easy to overthink things! In some cases, thought isn’t required.
So remind Nia the Zoom cam can be shuttered. Or perhaps she could wear a mask or a colorful scarf to shield her eyes. Dance by feeling the movement! Heck! Maybe let Thalia guide her through some moves! 😬
What’s the worst that could happen? Nia could become a 2-hoop Hula Hooper! I think she’d find the geometry of circles soothing. 🤔😬
