A note from Loveletterist:

This morning I get to spend an hour with my hair stylist.

She's one of my favorite people in this beautiful wide world.

In fact, one story in Poise is dedicated to her generosity and kindness -- shaving my head when the strands started to leave me in clumps.

Sometime in my mid forties I made a decision to go short. I have never regretted it. Short suits my small frame. Big hair overwhelms me.

Know thyself!

I like the text-tuurrr of the pic-tuurrr, but who is Willie S.?

Oh, I just realized this is Willie the Shake, as Joni Mitchell referred to him.

My wife keeps pressing the envelope of shorter and shorter. I’m hoping she stops that trend before she reaches the length of Sinead O’Connor’s hair when it was at its shortest! Loads of talent but not a great hairdresser.

I shaved my entire beard, except the mustache, and shortened my locks, when my son was about 8 or 9. When he got off the bus he observed my neighbor (a retired D. C. Police commander) talking with me. Nate concluded that the neighbor had corralled a burglar!

I must conclude that all the pieces have fallen into place! Loads of talent and a hairdresser you love! 👏🏼👏🏼

I think Sinead’s style was a declaration of some kind?

I can’t stand hair on my face and I don’t have a lot of energy for styling it. I do love the look of long luscious locks, they’re just not a fit for me. 🤷‍♀️

When you had all the hair… was it bothersome? Itchy? Did it keep you warm?

In those days I used a trimmer to keep a clean line on both cheeks as well as a line below my jaw line. So as wild as my beard looked (I once shared a picture from when I was managing a construction project), it wasn’t itchy. The hair served as winter insulation. Now, w/o a warm hat my noggin is a bit cold.

Your hairstyle compliments your face very nicely. I hope your stylist appointment was just as you liked today. Does this length keep your head warm in colder weather? 😉

It does not keep me warm. I wear my winter coat and a hat in the house for much of winter. 🤷‍♀️

Got it. Listen to your body, not high fashion “musts.”

For me, silk long johns are an excellent way of keeping warm. Synthetic composition is not my buddy! Skin becomes red and painful. The silk ones are not bulky. Two piece - a top and a bottom.

If high fashion is your thing go for it! But if it doesn’t fit, don’t do it to belong. There is a beautiful woman reporter whose name I don’t recall… she has very short hair and wears it beautifully. She inspired me.

Thanks for the tip about long johns. You probably have very little need for them in Florida?

Fall is coming in deliciously here. I did get out on the paddleboard yesterday. Might be a couple of chances in the coming week, and then, it might be time for it to come inside for a winter nap.

Even in Florida! I’ve adapted to this climate over the course of 52 years. And temperatures below freezing, even snow, are not that rare. In the early 80’s a freak cold snap-approaching 4° for several days-broke water lines in office buildings, froze vegetation that would have started blooming in a few weeks, and closed a great extent of I-10. (Bridge freezes before road surface!)

I’ve camped in below freezing conditions (not recently) and appreciated all my warm gear. Long johns included! 😊

After the paddle board hibernates, do you ski? Trek with snow shoes when the snow requires/allows? Curl up by the fireplace, blanket tent optional?

All degrees of adaptation. 😁

I missed the memo! In my 20’s and on through my 30’s, I had a full head of dark brown curly hair and a full, wiry beard. I described myself as a “white Jimi Hendrix.” Perhaps that accounts for my attraction to women with longer hair.

I always find short hair attractive on women. To me it says, "I have 457 things to do today, and hair care is NOT one of them." Both current and former wife have short 'dos, and even among women I've dated the longest hair was down to the bottom of her collar. Nothing against women with long hair, I guess, but shorter hair means I'm already inclined to view them as serious and efficient before I know anything else.

Same with men, now that I think on it. 🤔

Oh! Nia is wrapping herself in “serious and efficient”!

I wanted short hair like Barbara from a soap my mom watched — As the World Turns. I tried once in my 20s and felt too… unique? Unveiled? Out of step with society’s definition of beauty?

I hated dealing with the blow dryer and curling iron only to have many bad hair days despite the effort.

Short it is!
