In this morning's Mind of Curiosity conversation, a participant said that when he gets hyper-focused on his goals he finds it helpful to look back at all of the things he's already accomplished with gratitude.
Had I not started writing 100 words a day back in 2016, I'd likely have never published a book, that I can draw in without fear of a copyright lawsuit. 🙌🏻
One thing does indeed lead to another.
I feel like... if I hear the word/phrase 'manifest'/'law of attraction' without being anchored in effort and struggle... I might... oh I don't know... binge eat cookies. 😂
As you know, Gail, I've had a similar trajectory from writing a bit in 2016 to publishing a book. (I haven't drawn in mine, though, lol.) Right now, I don't have a direction. I'm waiting to what will unfold, and I'm OK with that. Personal growth is exhausting and I need a break!
A box of 4 massive cookies came home with my husband a couple of days ago from a franchise called Dirty Dough. I love their tagline, "Its what's on the inside that counts."
That said... either I'm listening better, or my body has become better at speaking up(?). I ate 1/4 of one cookie yesterday after lunch and felt ick! for much of the afternoon. I will NOT be binge eating the cookies. 😂
First, toward the cookies! (What do you think about the ones Julie offered up recently?) I was totally unaware of the copyright concerns you just voiced. I’m reasonably certain that’s where X is now, or at least headed. Ditto SubStack? 😱
Julie’s pumpkin cookies sound grand. I particularly appreciated her tip about mixing the baking soda into the pumpkin for added fluff factor!
Well… As for copyright, I had an idea to use musical scores as artwork backdrop for book 5. Book 5!!! Then I wondered… whose music would I use? Is there copyright I need to consider?
After a couple of days of percolating, problem solved! I can use the effect while using my own work. Sweet!
Julie’s recipe, semi-nicked from a friend, appeared in her blog post on Oct 16. If I trial and erred enough, emphasis on erred, I’d maybe discover how to share links across platforms. 🤷🏽
X has proposed that they will lay claim to anything anyone posts on that platform. Even by those with the coveted blue check mark @ $8 per month.
For SubStack I don’t know how the use of that platform works financially. A fee for usage but your work is your work? I see some political users on SS that show the copyright symbol on their posts.
I hadn't heard that about "Twittex," Gary. I'd been leaning toward leaving at the end of the year. If that proposal goes through, I may jump ship sooner. Musk is such a Twit. (Get it? Twit? As in Twitter? As in "a silly annoying person," per Merriam Webster? Aren't I clever? 🤣) Gail- I wonder if you should consider a copyright symbol?
Maybe I should consider a copyright symbol? Sounds like a new habit that my inner voice says I don't need to worry about. 🤷🏻♀️ As I said to Gary, my trust might come back to bite me?
I saw a little barb tossed at someone on LinkedIn recently for "copying a story" without giving credit. I wrote a long reply... and then deleted it.
In my heart I believe in giving credit whenever it's possible to do so. That said, I'm aware that my subconscious nick's a lot of stuff without my conscious awareness. I believe if a story has value and can be shared, let it be shared. There is a higher power keeping score.
Anybody can use the platform for free. If/when you receive subscription fees, Substack gets a cut. Quite simple actually... and generous if you ask me.
I do believe we own our work completely and from what I've read along the way from the founders, their values and "why" have always been writer-centric. Unless there is a change in ownership or management, I have trust that the founders are operating on values that are in line with mine.
All of that said... I am not a scholar of legal matters and could potentially get burned by my trust. A chance I am often willing to take. 🤷🏻♀️
On your A-game this morning LoveLetterist! Art most of all! A truly fine fox. A thought from Wandering Words. And a group/song old enough to be found in my sentimental jukebox. (A good choice to sustain geezer interest. 😉 )
Let’s not forget The Muses, eh? On a bit of a roll themselves! If I were inclined to twirl I’d invite Tal out onto the dance floor. I have a good liability insurance policy. In case I fall on her or into the audience. 🙃
Do you hear that music? Journey. “Don’t stop believin’
I knew when the idea to draw in my book arrived that it was gonna be a good day. 😂
I just love it when all of the pieces (I have a sentimental jukebox too) line themselves up and I get to piece them together.
I was a Journey fan back in the day! Also loved a group called Survivor from around the same time. I recall having a cassette tape with one of their albums that I played on repeat. There of course was a favored song that I cannot recall. Maybe someday I’ll hear it on the grocery store speakers and have a “eureka” moment.
Best of all… the idea I mentioned for the next project is still sticking and —took on a new dimension with today’s exploration! Yahoo!
A note from LoveLetterist:

Whoa! That left an impression!

What direction are you heading?

I am so lucky to have crossed your path and to have you as a friend as we go forward… with rests as needed. 🤗
Thank you for being here and enriching my life!
Loved the pictures from the wedding! Glad to hear the worst of Covid is behind you.
For everyone interested in Karen’s memoir Growth and/or her blog:

Her shared experiences around people pleasing tendencies have helped me to grow tremendously.
That's so kind, Gail! No surprise there- that's who you are to the core. And ditto back to you. ❤️
I just opened the cookies! 🍪😂🤣😂🍪
hahahahaha!

Me either... but it was fun to say! 😉🍪😎

Household chores are next in line...

X and Substack headed now? I don’t understand.
I missed Julie's cookie recipe. Would you mind linking or posting again?
Hi Karen,
Julie’s recipe, semi-nicked from a friend, appeared in her blog post on Oct 16. If I trial and erred enough, emphasis on erred, I’d maybe discover how to share links across platforms. 🤷🏽
To post a link in comments I simply copy and paste it. As best I'm aware we are not able to embed links into words or phrases in Substack comments.
Here is the link to Julie's post containing the cookie recipe:

Cookie recipe is in the link above Karen!

Substack's financial as best I understand:

Fantastic!
This made me laugh— "nobody can sue us!"
What a gorgeous fox and I really enjoyed your book —Wandering Words. Thank you for sharing your growth and wisdom. You're inspiring me!
Likewise Julie!
Thanks, Gail, and Julie!
