I was going to comment on Cal’s comment: “You mean baking POWDER, not baking soda - otherwise you need an acid to activate the base in the soda” but no, there’s the cake recipe and yes, it’s baking SODA. 🤔

See, this is why I only make baked stuff from a recipe. 🫤

Except bran muffins. Bran muffins are trivial.

Bran muffins… I’d likely never choose unless that was the only option. 😂

As a young boy we used to put baking soda in miniature plastic submarines that perhaps arrived in cereal boxes? A metal gizmo, the anti-turret, permitted soda and water entry. 🤔

The soda and water created bubbles that “lifted the sub a bit” and once the bubble(s) burst, down for another deep dive!

I guess to do that today with cereal, any cereal, would run afoul of safety regulations on choking hazards. 🤷🏽 I rarely tried to eat my submarine.

I remember those baking soda propelled floating thingies! Okay, that argues for baking soda being sufficient to itself.

Between your offering up an inspirational read and a yummalicious recipe, seems I struck gold !

Tracking the book back to Amazon offered a read of the back cover that afforded important detail on the author’s life experience. And helpful context for the quote you chose.

🙏🏽

This has become the only chocolate cake recipe I use. I’ve tried others since I found it and always wished I’d stuck with Aunt Velma’s tried and true. 🤷‍♀️

Now I’m going to track down that back cover! I only read the book description.

My peek at Amazon at the book offered a “swipe left” to see the back cover.
