George Carlin: “Why is it that people say they ‘slept like a baby’ when babies wake up like every two hours?” 😁

With a name like “Death Wish,” a prospective customer has a good idea what they’ll be getting! 😳

😁 I’ve said more than once that if I don’t know the facts I just make some up. That said, please look at my reply to Jack H on very rare coffee beans. Not invented. 🙋🏼‍♂️

Here’s a fun coffee fact: many consider a type of Arabica bean, purposely fed to elephants then expelled, etc., to be the best tasting coffee you’ll ever drink! Black Ivory Coffee, considered the best and rarest, costs $1100/kg. Shipping not included. The elephants are very heavy!🤔

When I checked these facts, I learned there’s an even more obscure variety: beans digested by Palm Civet monkeys. The most expensive variety comes from letting the monkeys choose their own coffee berries. $600/#! Really...

We took a tour of a small local roaster quite a while back and they told us about such caffeinated monkey business. 🐒

I appreciated the higher cost per pound if the monkeys got to choose their own beans! I pictured some real monkey business… Sorry.

I have to admit that I've never had "Death Wish Coffee" either but I've had lots and lots of other coffee daily!

Do you grind you own beans? I do, but I’m doubtful that I’d be astute enough to notice any difference between that and pre-ground. 🤷‍♀️

No, I don't grind my own beans. I've tried that before and was a complete failure as I never seemed to get the grind the way I wanted it. I didn't have the patience to keep trying and gave the grinder to my daughter. It works fine for the milkshake stuff she drinks! LOL

I grind my beans. When I discovered all coffee didn’t taste like Chase and Sanborn, I bought a decent hand powered grinder. Adjustable for a range of coffee types. Many cranks per pot. 🙃

Later I opted to go electric and learned the bladed type are not able to produce consistent results like a “burr mill.” Our present one has held up well for about 7 years. Nothing like the smell of freshly ground beans in the morning. 😋

A percolator, huh? I would have expected nothing less than French press! The grounds that bypass the strainer offer an interesting smile potential... Are you sure Tal doesn’t have her own tucked away in a kitchen cabinet?

Rebellious by nature? A local offering?? Someone may have switched the beans on me. 🙃. Oh, Grouchy by nature isn’t quite the same. 😔

Do you suppose the character Tom Hanks played in “A Man Called Otto” was so self critical he could not call his own efforts “A job well done?” Leaving such a voice behind can often pose a struggle.

Now for a cup of Death Wish Coffee! 🙂

No French press. I’m not sure if I ever had coffee made in one. 🤔

Rebellious By Nature is Death Wish Coffee’s tagline. You have to click the link to see that.

I agree… Otto holds incredible (self critical!) standards for himself… and therefore everyone else. There is so much to love about this story/book/film and all of Frederick Backman’s novels. He beautifully reflects all the colors of humanity.

Do you sense the movie, Otto, did Justice to Backman’s book?

Now, a slice of toast and jam, made with Dave’s Killer Bread! 😋

Yes… although I am one of those whose imagination creates its own pictures to go with a book. There’s always a little dissonance to have my mental images meet with another’s.

I just flashed back to Hanks’ obsession with controlling vehicles (and drivers) on their non-public street. A line from the AA Big Book says, “We step on the toes of our fellows and they retaliate.” Preceding that appeared, “Lack of power, that was our dilemma.” After losing both an unborn child and later his wife, the illusion of control was what he clung to, right down to three failed suicide attempts! Control indeed!

I love all of Backman’s books!!! I saw the Swedish version of the book and it was fantastic. Can’t wait to see the new one. Glad you got to see it.

Does Bachman specialize in complex character studies for his books? I had no prior familiarity with his writing, but found Hanks’ character in a state of near constant rage. Of course as the pieces, past and present, fell into place I felt compassion for his plight. And I marveled that he allowed some of his humanity to shine through.

From what I know about Backman, he gets his characters from the crazy in his head (His words. Not mine). He has struggled with mental illness and has a complex life/history.

That helps quite a bit. Thanks, Billie.
