“Which of you is the voice of I am not doing it right enough?” Thalia munched on a handful of honey roasted peanuts.
Calliope looked at Urania.
Urania looked at Calliope.
Both swallowed, inhaled, and paused.
Cal, always so eager to please, thought it might be her.
Nia, always so eager to produce the best and brightest, thought it might be her.
“Me,” the two muses said in unison.
“I don’t know why I asked… except to call attention to our sometimes problematic perspective. There’s no blame to be had…heaven knows I have my flaws, too. And we are all doing our best.” The Muse of Wit took a long drink from her ruby tumbler. “Is it okay if I point it out when I see the ruse washing over us? So that we might remind ourselves and Typist that there are better ways over, under, around, or through obstacles? You’re both strong enough to handle the awareness?”
Urania looked at Calliope.
Calliope looked at Urania.
“Yes, and that means…” said Nia.
Cal continued, “… we can do the same when you’re acting all crackermuse?”
“I suppose so.” Thalia twirled to see if she’d get a reaction. “Effective communication is a two, or in our case three, or four, way street. The more the merrier!”
A word from Typist:
Honest and vulnerable communication is not hard or scary when there is trust.
I have recently joined a group of women that is meeting weekly. We are six in all, residing on widely scattered latitudes and longitudes on the pale blue dot. What unites us is a desire to become better listeners, a willingness to grow our perspectives, and an intention to make each other stronger and more courageous through our connection. We are practicing sharing circle style communication. After just two meet-ups, we’re well on our way to becoming fast friends.
One thing that filled me with curiosity from this morning’s gathering is that 3 or more of us admitted to leaving last week’s conversation with some form of I am not doing it right enough in our minds.
Urania and Calliope are not alone!
I am so glad that we were willing to shine a light on the spell, so that going forward, each of us can put the false story to rest.
